Whether the issue surrounds academic difficulties, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, social and\/or behavioral disorders, or mental disorders, help is available in many different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Response to Intervention<br \/>\nWhen a child is identified as needing more assistance, schools provide Response to Intervention, also known as RTI. Response to Intervention uses high quality, research-based instruction in general and special education to provide services and interventions to students who struggle to learn and may be at risk or suspected of having learning disabilities. While it does not provide specialized instruction, it can &#8220;even the playing field&#8221; for students who have disabilities. A student must be evaluated for a Section 504 Plan, but the law does not require comprehensive testing. In order to have an IEP, a student must be evaluated. If a parent has a concerns about their child, he or she can request an evaluation. In Missouri, there are 13 different educational categories that can be considered after an evaluation including, but not limited to, Autism, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Other Health Impaired, Intellectual Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Orthopedic Impairment, Visual Impairment, and Speech\/Language Impairment. There are timelines that schools must adhere to and certain steps that must be taken.
